Mark Wahlberg leads the cast of Contraband, a fast-paced thriller about a man trying to stay out of a world he worked so hard to leave behind and the family he’ll do anything to protect. Set in New Orleans, the film explores the cutthroat underground world of international smuggling—full of desperate criminals and corrupt officials, high-stakes and big payoffs—where loyalty rarely exists and death is one wrong turn away.

Chris Farraday (Wahlberg) long ago abandoned his life of crime, but after his brother-in-law, Andy (Caleb Landry Jones), botches a drug deal for his ruthless boss, Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi), Chris is forced back into doing what he does best—running contraband—to settle Andy’s debt. Chris is a legendary smuggler and quickly assembles a crew with the help of his best friend, Sebastian (Ben Foster), to head to Panama and return with millions in counterfeit bills.

Things quickly fall apart and with only hours to reach the cash, Chris must use his rusty skills to successfully navigate a treacherous criminal network of brutal drug lords, cops and hit men before his wife, Kate (Kate Beckinsale), and sons become their target.

Comments:

OK, this is a show that I would most probably not watch if I wasn’t given the free tix. Why? Not that the story wasn’t interesting, but the cast were, perhaps, not as well known. BUT, this is a good show to show how sometimes, human are being forced to do illegal stuff.

The fast pace and tightly knitted show is able to keep my attention on the screen during the whole period of time (at least enough for me to control the urge to visit the washroom!)

This is definitely recommended for thrill-lovers…

Magic To Win 開心魔法

1 Dec

Cast:
Wu Chun aka Ling Feng (Earth)
Louis Koo aka Gu Xin Yue (Wood)
Wong Bak Ming aka Prof Kang (Water)
Wu Jing, Jacky aka Ye Wu (Fire)
Tony Jan aka Charlie (Gold)
Karena aka Macy

Synopsis:

Macy bumps into Prof Kang (Water Magician) during a thunderstorm and the lightning caused Prof Kang to transfer his powers to her unknowingly. This resulted in her getting involved in the fight within the five element magicians who were all kidnapped by the fire magician so as to ‘borrow’ their powers by force to go back to the past….

Viewer rating: **** (4/5)

Comments:

Thanks Clover for the tickets!

It’s a simple plot with no cliché plot  (eg. the female lead and one of the magician fall in love blah blah). Very cool CGI, which is the reason why you should watch it in the cinemas… I don’t know why, it’s very nicely-done, but something is missing somewhere…

I like the little cute parts, when Ling Feng (Chun) loses his power and became invisible to everyone else except magician… I guess this is what is related to the Happy Ghost series from 20 yrs back? because ghost can’t be seen etc.

Bloopers:

I spotted a mistake in the subtitles and dubbing, and I wonder what was wrong. In the plot, the female lead Macy (Karena) used her magic powers to earn money with her friends, when Karen said she wants all the money earned to be donated to Charity, her friend said, no problem, after the deduction of the various expenses (food, travel, etc) BUT the subtitle reads, the money can be used for shopping, buying their favourite stuff etc. Completely different!

Tower Heist

2 Nov

Synopsis:

Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy lead an all-star cast in Tower Heist, a comedy caperabout working stiffs who seek revenge on the Wall Street swindler who stiffed them. After the workers at a luxury Central Park condominium discover the penthouse billionaire has stolen their retirement, they plot the ultimate revenge: a heist to reclaim what he took from them.

Queens native Josh Kovacs (Stiller) has managed one of the most luxurious and well-secured residences in New York City for more than a decade. Under his watchful eye, nothing goes undetected. In the swankiest unit atop Josh’s building, Wall Street titan Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda) is under house arrest after being caught stealing two billion from his investors. The hardest hit among those he defrauded? The tower staffers whose pensions he was entrusted to manage.

With only days before Arthur gets away with the perfect crime, Josh’s crew turns to petty crook Slide (Murphy) to plan the nearly impossible…to steal what they are sure is hidden in Arthur’s guarded condo. Though amateurs, these rookie thieves know the building better than anyone. Turns out they’ve been casing the place for years, they just didn’t know it.

Viewer rating: *** (3.5/5)

Comments:

Once again, thanks omy.sg for the Movie Tickets!

This comedy is a great if you need some laughter after a day of stress. The plot is unreal, especially the part where they try to get the loot out of the top floor. It is witty, amusing and there are scenes where you can’t wait to see what’s next.

I remembered the part where the rookies have to steal some things from the mall to prove that they are capable of stealing, you mean you can really steal things without setting the alarms off in a mall? Gosh, how untrue can that get?!

The part I enjoyed most was the part where Slide carried out his plans without the rest of the rookie thieves, wanting to get the loot for himself. This is actually the most “real” part. Hey, in real life, which “real thief” will actually risk his life for a bunch of people he don’t know and not get anything?

Someone worth a mention, the maid whose dad is a locksmith, and helped the gang pick the safe… Watch the trailer and her desperate conversation with the thief, you can’t help but relate to the society when girls started getting desperate when they can’t get married!

Getting all addicted to Auction @ SOLD.SG~

21 Aug

What’s an auction?  The first picture in my mind will be call the rich people in suits bidding for priceless drawings and jewellery, raising their tags to up the price every time they wish to up their bid.

But this?!

Bloggers awaiting for the auction intro (excitedly)

The UBER big Mac screen… and the sold.sg poster… hahah

This is the office of SOLD.SG, an online auction website which sells popular stuff like shopping vouchers, electronic products at great discount. This 1 year-old company is currently the largest pay-to-bid auction site in Singapore.

Like everyone, the first question I have in my mind is, “Is this real? Or is it a scam? fraud?”

So when I went to the office tour, I had this skeptical thought with me, but SURPRISE! “I was greeted with a “Hello, yes we’re real!” (read my mind huh? lol)

I felt that this was more like a home tour (with cool Mac Monitors and office space) than an office tour. I was expecting a bunch of old uncles who are rich and have nothing better to do than to buy stuff and then sell stuff at cheep cheep (cheap) prices. But guess what? The team is made up of all young and energetic youths (like me :P )

They are all very open and transparent with how they operate, (not giving dark looks when I ask questions or say the “it’s our trade secret” kinda answers). In fact they even said that they welcome users of their site to drop by anytime and meet the team~

Young peeps right? Haha

With all the brand new goods gotten from their suppliers (@..@) in their office, they were all mailed out as soon as payment were made. All products placed on their website are also carefully selected to ensure quality and high standards (I’m the witness… they are indeed in great condition)

But what’s the bad thing being part of their team ? (I was envious of them for a teeniest moment, until they announced it) They are very strict that no employees and immediate family members of SOLD.SG are allowed to participate (All employees have to sign a contract stating so)

THAT is SOOOOO Sad… To watch all the fun and not being able to join in?! Gosh, I’m glad I’m not working in there. BECAUSE I can join in the exciting auction. It really gets our heart pumping, just by watching the auctions, it’s exciting enough!

Tips and Tricks to get WHAT U WANT on SOLD.SG

21 Aug

For Beginners:

SOLD.SG Auction Master: Many beginners don’t try the Learner’s Auction which we provide for them. The chances of getting these prizes are higher, because the number of people who can bid for the items are restricted to users who have never won an auction before.

Here are more tips:

Start small

On Sold.sg you’ll see everything from USB sticks, to iPads. Some items are worth $50, some are worth over $1,000. As you can imagine, the more expensive items attract the most bidders, which makes them harder to win. So if you’re new to Sold.sg, you should go for one of the cheaper items as you’ll have a greater chance of winning, plus you’ll get to learn how Sold.sg really works. It just takes a bit of practice!

Go for a Beginner Auction

A Beginner Auction (denoted with an “L” plate) is only open to bidders who’ve never won before, so this is a great opportunity for you to win your first item! Using all of these tips, and your own bidding strategy, you’ll bag a bargain in no time. And who knows, your next win may be an Apple iPad or Sony PS3!

Note: Live Beginner Auctions are only visible to logged in, non-winners.

Take your time

This is very important! First, take your time and understand how Sold.sg works. Read through our guide and this help section, and browse some auctions. You’ll be surprised how much of an advantage you’ll have by following this simple tip. Secondly, once you’ve found an item you want to bid on, just watch the auction for a few minutes. See who’s bidding, and how much they’re bidding. You need to work out the best time to enter the auction so look at the past ended auctions and you’ll get an idea of how many bids are needed, and what price this item normally goes for.

Make sure you have enough time

If you’re about to eat lunch, or take the dog for a walk, don’t start bidding on an auction! Some auctions will end quickly, but some will go on for a few hours. So if you’re serious about winning an item, make sure you have enough time to keep bidding. However, you could set up the Auto-Bidder to bid while you’re away from the computer!

Focus on one product at a time

This is by far, the biggest mistake made by new users on Sold.sg. We offer so many GREAT products that people do not know what to bid on first. So instead, they place a couple of bids on several items all at the same time. It’s great when someone wins an item with just 1 Token, but it doesn’t happen that often. Instead of bidding on more than one auction at a time, just choose one and stick with it. You will have a much better chance of winning the item if you take this approach.

Scope out the competition

Sold.sg is one of the most competitive sites on the internet. So help yourself by taking the time to know who you’re up against. When you’re watching an auction, spend a few minutes and get an idea of who’s bidding, how often they’re bidding and what sort of strategy they’re using. On an auction page you will see the last 10 bidders of that particular auction.

If you see an auction with lots of different bidders, it’s probably best to find one with less competition.

Bid late, but not TOO late

This is another big mistake made by beginners on Sold.sg. If there is an hour left on an auction, don’t bid! This is a golden rule: ONLY BID IN THE LAST 10 SECONDS. You would think that bidding in the last second would be the best approach, but there are a few reasons why this isn’t the case. The main reason is that internet lag may prevent your bid being processed in time. To keep it simple, there are lots of bids placed on Sold.sg. We have to process these and perform calculations, update databases, and output the results back to the website, all in a fraction of a second! If a delay occurs anywhere along the way, and you place a bid with just 1 second to go, then your bid may not register, and the auction would end, assuming there are no other bidders. So, to be safe, try and bid when there is at least 3 seconds left on the clock. Alternatively, set the Auto-Bidder, as this will never be affected by internet lag.

Don’t be afraid of the Auto-Bidder

If you look through the ended auctions on Sold.sg, you will see that lots of auctions are won by people using the Auto-Bidder. It’s simply because a lot of people love to use it! If you’re bidding on an auction and you spot an aggressive Auto-Bidder, then try not to be put off. You have the advantage because you’re actually watching the auction, and you know what the competition is like. If several single bidders are battling with an Auto-Bidder, then sit back and watch. Save your bids, and jump in when the time is right. Remember: just because they’re using the Auto-Bidder doesn’t guarantee that they will win the auction. If you really don’t like the Auto-Bidder, then lookout for a Manual-Only auctions, where no Auto-Bidders are allowed.

Don’t be afraid of actually using the Auto-Bidder

The Auto-Bidder is a powerful tool, if you get the timing right you can scare off other bidders by placing one. Nobody likes to see their bids matched over and over again by your all conquering Auto-Bidder, you might just persuade them to give up and try again next time.

On the other hand, some people have a ‘fire and forget’ policy with the Auto-Bidder. It is easy to come in and win with a quick single bid if your rival has gone to make a cup of coffee safe in the knowledge that their Auto-Bidder will protect them. We’ve noticed that users tend to set the Upper Limit value of their Auto-Bidder to a round number, so watch out for this and you might be able to snap up a bargain by simply clicking on the “Bid” button when the Auto-Bidder has just finished.

However, we would caution you to read the mechanics of the Auto-Bidder thoroughly, and understand how it works completely before using it. Read more on how the Auto-Bidder works here. Keep a price limit in mind

It’s easy to get carried away in an auction when you really want something! But, remember that each bid costs you 75 cents. So you have to bear in mind the current auction price, and how many bids you’ve placed.

Don’t run out of bids

Give yourself a better chance of winning an auction by having lots of Tokens in your account. For example, instead of buying the smaller Token Packs, go for the medium or large Token Packs instead. Not only do you need to make sure you have enough Tokens in your account before you enter the auction, but also during. You would kick yourself if you were in the middle of a bidding battle, and had to stop and buy some more Tokens, only to see that the auction ended! You can help prevent this by following some of the earlier tips, like working out when to bid, how long the auction will run for and roughly how many Tokens it will take to win the item.

Don’t get distracted

If you’re bidding on Sold.sg, try not to multitask. Turn off the TV, pause your MP3 player and shut down solitaire. Do whatever it takes to ensure you can really concentrate on an auction!

Tips to reduce bidding/timer lag

We mentioned internet lag in an earlier bidding tip, which could cause your last second bid not to be registered. On top of that, you may also experience general computer lag, perhaps if you’re running several applications at the same time, or browsing several websites in multiple tabs. Here are some tips to reduce both internet lag, and general computer lag:

- Shut down resource-intensive applications.
- Software such as Adobe Photoshop or Apple iTunes can often cause your computer to run slowly, especially if it’s an old laptop or PC.
- Make sure you’re using an up-to-date internet browser. You may be using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome or Safari. Whichever browser you use, look for an update button and download the latest version.
- Close any programs that require an internet connection (apart from your browser). For example, close down any torrent applications, stop playing Call of Duty on your Xbox, stop streaming the latest episode of Dexter. This will give you the best possible experience when bidding on Sold.sg. On top of this, these are all distractions!

Viewer rating: ***** (5/5)

Comments:

First of all, thanks to omy.sg for the Movie Tickets!

When I watched the trailer, it did not really spark my interest. But the movie itself gave me a lot of surprises, and laughter was heard throughout the movie. I love the part where Annie tried to catch the attention Officer Nathan Rodes by driving pass him repeatedly, doing different stunts. It was simply hilarious, crazy, and inspiring.

Why inspiring?

The part where one of the bridesmaid, (the groom’s sister) came to visit Annie after the quarrel and got her back to her feet by sharing her own experience. The part may be funny, but it makes me think about how some people will blame everyone else besides themselves for everything bad that happened to them. They will pity themselves and give up on themselves, but they don’t realise that the whole fault lies on themselves.

A quote from Gavin, who watched the show with me, ” The movie portrays an intriguing and realistic wedding plan experience; a true reflection of reality and also an extraordinary friendship which was underestimated in dire times”

The SSUE Experience

18 Jul

This SSUE trip is my first time going on long distance trip myself, and I guess the most memorable part of the whole trip, besides the friendship and exchange (中新交流), will be the performances we have to prepare over there, after all, heading the performance team has to be prepared to do the performance

Our brainstorming went from dances (KPOP) to funny dances to songs that represent the four races in Singapore to the legendary Matchmaking variety show.

In the first leg at Sichuan, I had to be the female contestant choosing the male contestants. The really fun part was working out the script- what everyone is going to do and say during the preparation.

I was really panicking when the songs chosen and the dance I came up with was rejected like the night before the performance. On the day of the performance, I was SUPER nervous. But it’s like 我豁出去了!I really enjoyed the hospitality extended by the Sichuan students, and I really really wanted to do something for them.

The male contestants from NUS making their choices

情歌王子 Wee Shian touching every female audiences’ hearts with his song

Prelude: Mambo King with all the girls

Mambo King with his fans

美国人’s sweet script…

My final choice… Rain

Green Lantern

17 Jun

I’ve got to admit it, great effects… I’m not a marvel comic reader, so besides the famous Spiderman, Superman and a few other superheroes like X-men and Wolverine, I don’t really know who are they and what they do.

So you can expect that this is the first time I’ve heard of Green Lantern… it’s a nice show, with great CGI and funny punchlines…

But the ending was a little expected, I was just telling Gav how the part II will be continued by having the fear ring worn by someone since it appeared in the show but wasn’t used, when they show one of the Green Lantern putting on the ring and became a yellow lantern… lol…

lalala… I’m so brilliant… ok, it’s just pure logic ba…

Watching the show makes my “Superhero” video seems stupid… lol…

Beastly

23 May

This is a movie which I’ve waited for more than half a year! It was supposed to be out since Jul 2010, but it was delayed to avoid clashing with the release of Zac Efron’s Charlie St Cloud…

The plot focuses on Kyle Kingson, a wealthy and arrogant high school student. During an environmental event, he disrespects a classmate, who is secretly a witch in disguise. The witch then casts a spell on Kyle to disfigure his body and face, giving him a year to find love or be left with his monstrous appearance forever.

For Beauty and the Beast fans, yeap, it’s beauty AND the beast… just that I think the movie is more focused on the beast (aka Kyle) rather than the Beauty like in the cartoon…

It’s a nice show, no surprises, but it’s not bad either, and I like the “witch’s” performance… her nonchalent, odd behaviour… it is a bit more outstanding than Vanessa’s “Beauty” role~

Being a fan of Zanessa, I will still give this a thumbs up for the great makeup on Hunter, the “rose greenhouse”, the weird yet clever witch… and also the twist in the ending…

It makes me wonder if there is a part 2 to the show and left me wanting more… :)

and of cuz, who you watch it with matters a lot too~
lol…
