1f. Final Work

15 Feb

This are the screenshots of my final website.

You may find some differences from the actual site pages, like less words or picture cuts due to the positioning of images in dreamweaver.

I learnt a lot from this assignment, thanks to Jia Xiang, my great dreamweaver free tutor, teaching me how to use the css codes and ‘forcing’ me to attempt myself (even though I still mess up in the end!)

Also, I managed to link up my resume pdf by myself! OK, that’s a SUPEr great achievement, considering the noob level I’m in~

To view the website, click here: www.tiffanys-webfolio.info

I will like to thank: Ng Jia Xiang for ALL his help- coding expert… Anyone who wants to build a site, please contact him! Kenny Khek for ‘forcing’ me to buy a domain at the very last moment, Eng Chye for calming me down and teaching me how to connect server and domain…

Reflections and fears

27 Apr

It’s nearly 3am…

But I’m super awake… My worries started coming back. People’s words start ringing in my ears, “1 mark deductd per minute late. Is it for real?

I really wannt score an A for this module. The first time I wanna score well…

Will my lateness cause me this grade to disappear?

If time goes back, the same thing may happen again. Because I really need the money.

I need to work, that’s why I have to sacrifice the time for money.

I’m really going crazy soon…

I love this module, but how~

Please, can god give some miracle and let Jing not penalise anyone who is late. Please…

Anyone… Plus me…

This module has enable me to work for my other modules as well, it gave me the confidence I never has before… but… please, let me score well…

Portfolio

port2

The concept of the portfolio was planned out sometime ago. But regretfully, I didn’t have the time to complete it. But theis was the rough idea.

It’s a concept of having a modern desktop, where the contents is a filmstrip with all my works and the Assignments headings were supposed to be in the form of notebook. Every assignment is supposed to have their sketches and stuff. But everything wasn’t put together on time.

I hope the idea of my like craft work is put across here.

The Book Store I went besides Popular

The Book Store I went besides Popular

Way before the project theme was announced, I went to Bras Basah complex to check out the different kind of storybooks available. i went to a shop called Children’s Book Centre (Address #04-53). For the design report, I went back there again to take several photos with the store owner’s permission.

p.s [Photographs taken courtesy of Children’s Book Centre at Bras Basah Complex]

As the page is quite long, I decided to transfer to another post:

I grouped with Sherman, Jasmine, Estee and Jalea whom I have worked with in my NM3215 project.

STAGE 1 – IDEA GENERATION

We generated our ideas over the IVLE community and there were plenty of ideas like:

1. Having the main character being a really cute tortoise and the story or something has to do with the tortoise’s home being on one side of a hedge. and he spends most of the story wondering what’s on the other side, and he goes around asking his mother his friend his neighbour etc. etc. and they all tell him not to bother, and that his home’s very comfortable and nice already, why trouble himself. when he does go over or through the hedge. he bumps into a lot of problems, cars or something until eventually a human kid picks him up and bring him home. (bad ending)

OR

once he gets captured and put into a tank, he gets depressed and the human that catches him notices and releases him back into the wild!!!! (good ending)

moral of the story? listen to your parents. ~ Sherman

2. Steve= who can be an animal/ toddler or something who hates colouring. Everytime his mother taught him colouring, he will anyhow scribble. (We can show a picture with a transparency with scribbles on top). Stephy, Steve’s elder sister loves colouring. One day, Steve woke up with the whole world in black and white. Steve started crying. Stephy comforted Steve and started on on a mission to fill the world with colours.

Activities in stories like help Steve and Stephy colour the world with the correct colours. ~ Me!

3. Mandy save her parents!

Mandy has 6 siblings. She is the middle childe. Mandy is a shy kid. Whenever her friends play hopscotch, she will always be the one sitting by the side. Whenever her friends play catching, she will always not be found. Mandy is not good at sports but she likes puzzles. Her parents always forgot to call her out for meals as she’s always so quiet. Whenever her parents put her siblings to sleep, they often miss her out. One night, Mandy saw a bright light in the sky. She heard a scream. Mandy ran to the window and saw UFOs! They have caught her parents! Mandy is scared. But she remember how her grandfather always call her to be brave. Mandy ran out and stopped the aliens from catching her parents. The alien look at her and says, “I hav 3 baby aliens. They are very playful and went missing. Help me find them and I will release your parents” Mandy is scared, but in order to save her parents, she has to be brave. Help Mandy save her parents by solving the puzzle. 1. Spot the Alien babies (Osborne puzzles) 2. Join the number dotted lines 3. Open tabs to find the alien baby. ~ Me!

4. Alice in Singapore

Alice comes from England. Linda is her cousin living in Singapore. Alice came to spend her holidays with Linda. It is her first time visiting Singapore. Linda is excited to have her favourite cousin to stay. She plan to bring Alice to many places in Singapore. Linda brought Alice to Little India to see… She loves the colour of the saris and even tried on one… She saw the Indian temple and ppl going to pray… Linda brought Alice to Chinatown to … Alice bought a Qipao for herself. blah blah…

Matching the places of interest to the different ethnics/ costumes/ infrastructure. ~ Me!

5. Story of the Sun and the Moon
In this story, the two main characters are the sun and the moon. The plot behind this story is that the sun and the moon only get to see each other and play with each other during dawn and dusk, however before long either of them will be called back to their homes for their different bed times.
This story is adapted from an illustrated video on YouTube. However, we felt that this story does not have an appropriate moral for the children to learn from, and does not fit the target audience of 6-9 years old. ~ Jalea

6. In this story, the main character is Dino the little dinosaur. He is an avid traveler and decides to go on a world tour to visit the 7 wonders of the world. Along the way Dino faces interesting situations that causes him to learn lessons such as being environmentally friendly and to be a responsible tourist.

We thought of having this to be an activity book where children readers can fill in the names of the countries which are being visited in the story. However, we anticipated that the story would be too long, hence would not fulfill the requirements of the project being 12-20 pages long. In addition, the concept of teaching children about the 7 wonders of the world, as well as to inculcate a moral behind the story, would be too complex. ~ Estee

STAGE 2 - PRELIMINARY SKETCHES

Here’s the rough outline:

Sketches of the storyboard1

Sketches of the storyboard1

Sketches of storyboard2

Sketches of storyboard2

In the story, Timmy’s Little Adventure, there are a total of 5 characters – Timmy Tortoise, Papa Tortoise, Mama Tortoise, Mr. Fox and Penguin the Policeman.

We chose to use tortoises as the main characters in our story because they are familiar children storybook characters. Also, tortoises possess a vulnerable characteristic that would complement and go well with our storyline. In addition, in creating our tortoises, we are able to give them human-like expressions and characteristics, allowing us to explore and be creative with our illustrations.

Each of our group members played a different part in the designing of the storybook. Jalea designed (drew, colour, and vectorise) our main tortoise characters, Jasmine design Mr. Fox and Penguin the Policeman. Sherman drew half of the backgrounds and the vectorising of the backgrounds while Estee designed the backgrounds with the puzzle activities. And for me, I coloured and improved all the settings! and designed the inner house of Timmy’s family.

Final Project: Storybook -Work Process

Tiffany’s Work Process:

I wasn’t really involved in the drawing part of the storyboard, but more of the colouring using Illustrator. However, I suggested to have 3 layes instead of 2 for the starting page and helped to designed the inner room of Timmy’s house eg. Living Room, Bedrooms and Kitchen.

This is the draft:

Draft

Draft

After Sherman vectorised it, I worked on the background layouts.

Timmy's house

Timmy's house

I started with the first 2 colour schemes. And later worked on to the 3rd one for gradient and stuff. I found out that guys prefer the green while the ladies in our group prefer the brown one. In the end, due to majority votes (Since there’s more females) the final version is as shown. (Bottom right)

The inner house, also the one that the most details:

Inner House

Inner House

The challenge of colouring the innerhouse comes when working on the backdrop. The furnitures were coloured to get the right feeling first before working on the backdrop. As I wasn’t skilled in Illustrator initially, the one on the bottom left was done via photoshop. Thus, changes were almost impossible and have to be redone when changes needed to be made.

Park

Park

The initial version was to colour exactly what was vectorized. After some manipulations with the roots and stuff, and adding of mountains layers to make it look more realistic, here it is. The flowers were later changed too to make it look nicer.

Maze

Maze

The maze vectorised was a little problem-matic, thus I decided to experiment out a few versions of the maze. However, the purpose of the puzzle is to envourage Timmy or the reader NOT to step on grass. And the above maze did not fit to the theme. Thus the final version is born! (Bottom right)

STAGE 2 – PRELIMINARY SKETCHES:

We decided to include the element of interactivity in our storybook. Our storybook hence contains three interactivity pages – a maze page, a ‘find-the-objects’ page, and a ‘flip-open’ page.5

In addition, the language and sentence structures used in the books were simple and easily understood. We specifically took note of this particular point when generating the copy text for our storybook, choosing simple words and creating shorter sentences. We also avoided using words and phrases that carried strong negative connotations, such as ‘nagged’ or ‘reprimanded’. These factors are taken into account because we want children to be able to read and immerse themselves with the activity pages on their own. This would better instill and retain the lessons in the story, into their minds and memories.
Timmy’s Little Adventure

In this story, the main character is Timmy the little tortoise. Along with Timmy are his parents and two supporting characters, Mr. Fox and Penguin the Policeman. The story starts with Timmy being nagged at by his parents to not play soccer on the front lawn and to dispose his rubbish appropriately. Timmy gets annoyed and decides to disobey his parents by leaving home for the city, a place where he has never been before. The story continues with Timmy meeting Mr. Fox and Penguin the Policeman, who both teach him lessons that are similar to what Timmy learns at home.

We created this storybook with the idea of including interactive activities within, attaching a lesson to learn in each activity. This is such that the children readers are able to remember the lessons learnt better, whilst having fun with the activities. This story also allows us to articulate the lesson learnt about ‘Obeying Your Parents’ clearly, whilst adhering to the requirements of the project.

During the selection process of which idea to use for our storybook, we decided to narrow down the target audience to children aged 6 and 7. This is because we realized that the learning ability and preferences of children aged 8 and 9 differed from those aged 6 and 7. This allowed us to cater and zoom in on the needs and preferences of the younger aged pre-school children.

We selected ‘Timmy’s Little Adventure’ for several reasons.

Firstly, the use of animals as main characters in the story makes it attractive to young children between the ages of 6 and 7. With animals, we are able to explore the use of more colours, also giving each character human-like expressions, thus adding diversity to our story through personification.

Secondly, this story encapsulates two lessons to be learned: (i) Obey your parents and, (ii) Be environmentally responsible. These are lessons that could and should be taught to young children of 6 to 7 years old.

Thirdly, the element of creating an interactive storybook with fun activities for young readers could be tied in well with the morals and lessons in the story. This allows for better memory-retention of the morals and lessons in young readers as they go through the activities.

Timmy

Timmy

1) Timmy the Tortoise

When designing the main character Timmy, we designed his head to be much bigger in proportion to his shell body. This is a distinctive factor that distinguishes him from Papa and Mama Tortoise. It also makes Timmy’s appearance look more endearing to the readers.

Timmy's Parents

Timmy's Parents

2) Papa and Mama Tortoise

Papa and Mama Tortoise both possess distinct features that make them different from each other and from Timmy. Firstly, both Papa and Mama Tortoise have bigger shell bodies and heads that are more proportionate to their shells. Next, their facial features are distinct, such that they have nostrils whereas Timmy does not. Papa Tortoise can be distinguished by his spectacles and his thicker graying eyebrows. On the other hand, Mama Tortoise has eyelids, long eyelashes, rosy cheeks and wears an apron.

Mr Fox

Mr Fox

3) Mr. Fox

Mr. Fox plays the role of a nasty resident who gets angry at Timmy for trespassing and for trampling on his garden. Upon research, we discovered that tortoises had several predators. Badgers, foxes, coyotes, snakes and ravens are amongst the list of predators. From here, we decided to use the fox for this role because it possesses an antagonistic and hostile characteristic. Also, the fox is a more familiar animal as compared to the rest of the other animals. Mr. Fox has a sly expression that conveys its hostility as a nasty character in the story. In colouring Mr. Fox, we used tones of orange and brown. These are colours identifiable to foxes and are contrasting enough to bring out the nasty characteristic of Mr. Fox. The colour tones used were also of a darker shade so as to suggest menace and intimidation.

Penguin the Policeman

Penguin the Policeman

4) Penguin the Policeman

In our story, we needed an animal to play the role of a policeman who finds Timmy lost in the city and brings him home. We brainstormed for animals that possessed a genial characteristic, and a few that were mentioned included the penguin, rabbit, canary and dog. However, we felt strongly that the penguin would be a unique choice, because it does not get featured very much in children’s animal storybooks.

5. Your Notion of Colurful Asia Postcard (Compiled)

5. Your Notion of Colurful Asia Postcard

Objective – Create a postcard
Themes - Your notion of colourful Asia… (in cultural, politcal and social aspects of Asia)
Stage 0 - Idea Generation
Stage 1 - Preliminary Sketches (Hand-drawn)
Stage 2 - Colour Scheme Thumbnail Draft 1 (A3 size) and Postcard Prototype 1 (A6 size)
Stage 3 - Colour Scheme Thumbnail Drafts 2 (A3 size)
Stage 4 – Final Revised Work (A6 size)

STAGE 0 – IDEA GENERATION:

Mindmap5
Mindmap5

This assignment is known to be the most difficult assignment, because of the theme I think. When I wrote out the mindmap, I had so many ideas in my mind yet I couldn’t put them down in drawing. The frustrations is partly because of the limited knowledge about photoshop and NIL about Illustrator.

STAGE 1 – PRELIMINARY SKETCHES:

5sketches

5sketches2

You can see that these sketches are super rough, and they are all individual figures. I tried working with illustrator, but no matter what, I just simply can’t work it out.

My idea is to have various buildings from all over the countries, and people of different ethnic cultures parachuting down. However, I realise it means having different ethnic clothings =harder to draw.

You can see that lady from Thailand, when I drew out, I was thinking of the costume design. Thus the decision for not using that.

A stroke of idea made me thought of comic characters, and I decided to use comic characters from different countries. Japan’s characters are all over the place, and I tried researching and found Lao Fu Zi from Hong Kong, Pucca from Korea (though she looks Japan-ish), and Mr Kiasu representing Singapore.

I tried looking for Malaysia, India and other countries, but the cartoon characters etc were either not found or the size of the picture is too small for me to refer…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the infrastructure, I decided to use Mount Fuji for Japan and sakura flower blossom, and the Twin Petronas Tower for Malaysia, the temple like tower which is supposed to represent Korea, Taj Mahal for India , Taipei 101 for Taiwan, and the Great Wall of China for China. Of course, for Singapore, it would be the famous durian like explanade and the merlion.
STAGE 2 – COLOUR SCHEME THUMBNAIL DRAFT 1:
Colour scheme
Colour scheme
Everything didn’t work out as I imagine it to be. I had a difficult time arranging every thing and everything seems out of place. The biggest problem was with the Gret wall which is simply too abstract.
As everything was hand drawn, the colouring was a big headache for me as those area where my line doesn’t fully cover, it will end up colouring the whole layer.I tried blending and shadowing without any success. (see Great Wall)
POSTCARD PROTOTYPE 1:
Prototype 1 (Original)
Prototype 1 (Original)
In the end I decided to choose the original one as my final work.
CLASS REVIEW:
The class didn’t give much comment, as my inability to use Illustrator kinda spoilt everything and tied my hands down. The found the neon one nice, but I was thinking of using the uncoloured version for children to colour and they like the idea. The problem will be it will seem incomplete.
But the surprise was not many people know about Mr Kiasu! Hmmm, am I being too back-dated?
I decided to approach Jing after lecture, and she gave me a few suggestions. The main problem with my work is that’s too flat. (Wow, that’s the word for it!) It has no perspective and it isn’t arranged carefult. For eg. Taj Mahal is ‘heavy’ and should be placed near the bottom…
She roughly drew out the perspective I could have, and mentioned that if I followed this method, the problem may be solved. I asked if I should just concentrate with the comic characters instead, and she say that will simplify things A LOT and it will work the same.
She suggested using Lat for Malaysia, whose characters all have the nose shaped like this.lat-nose1
Thus I decided to follow her advice…
I asked if I could present 2 version of the postcard, one for kids (colouring version) and one as official. And she said yes!~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Before the Birth of Draft 2

Even though I said that I’m going to concentrate on the comic character, some teeny part of me is still unwilling to part with the buildings, but as there’s simple too many people working on the buildings already, the unique-ness is no longer there.

Thus, I was thinking along the line of “why should the comic characters come to be together? I suddenly thought of a great idea one of my classmate, Rui Shen had in his first assignment, using Egyptians carving as words. I decided to adapt the  idea and use it on the buildings!

Woohoo~ I solved my troubles!

By this time, I had finally learn how to use illustrator and understand what everyone means by the power of Illustrator. Because of the need to learn when colouring the final project.

STAGE 3 – COLOUR SCHEME THUMBNAIL DRAFT 2:

Colour scheme2
Colour scheme2

In my 2nd version, I used The “Chew on it” characters [Those comic strips you see in toilet, trains and Straits Times for Singapore, followed by Cha Cha Chaudhary for India, Doraemon for Japan, Mashimaro for Korea, Lat for Malaysia, The Sun Wu Kong (Monkey god) to represent comics from Taiwan ( I didn’t know till I research! Cool, the comics I have been reading like Journey to the West, Dao etc ar actually drawn by Taiwan artist!) and Lao Fu Zi from Hong Kong.

I made it like an Asian Exhibition where all the characters gather.

Using Illustrator, I managed to draw out everything and complete in 5hrs. (Power of Stress) The shaowing made everything more realistic. And the challenge comes when you have to leave everything in white before colouring them again.

Every characters are linked subtlely to one another, and I hope everyone can see it. From left, the ‘Chew on it’ character is turning back to see what happened with the Cha Cha Chaudhary trying to poke him with his stick. Doraemon is happily skipping around, with Sun Wu Kong looking at hime in amusement, Mashimaro is the only one looking at the exhibition intently (see the Korean South Gate it’s looking at) while is looking down to see what it’s doing. Lao Fu Zi is trying to act politically correct bywaving hi to everyone.

For the infrastructure, I tried to arrange everything in such a way that they can all be viewed clearly.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Colour schemes, instead of the usual titles of Warm, Cold, Sweet etc, I had something different like Food Poisoning( relating to the recent case), super powers etc, to relate to what kind of impression the whole picture gives when the colours are changed.
STAGE 4- FINAL WORK
Kids' version
Kids’ version
This Kid’s version hopes to let the children customise their own postcard by colouring them and sending them to their friends.
Final version
Final version
I chose the original one for the final as the original one brings out the essence of the whole picture best.
