Final: Script & Storyboard for Video 2

SCRIPT FOR CNM ADVERTISEMENT VIDEO (2)

1.

(O.S) This is a video guide to teach employers how to spot a CNM student in plain English

(O.S) These days, it is so easy to find a graduate in Singapore. Walk on the streets of Orchard road, the chances of approaching someone with a degree is like one out of four.  And they are all after ONE thing – A Job!

So how do you identify a Communications and New Media student from the crowd?

2.

(O.S) The first step: How to Identify a CNM student

3.

(O.S) Let’s take this Tom here as an example, a normal graduate. Now, let’s look at Tom as a CNM student.

4.

(O.S) Notice how bright the eyes are, and the head, is larger than normal graduates due to the unusual amount of creativity in it.

5.

(O.S) Hands, always constantly on the move, either on a smartphone, laptop or even on a sketchpad. This is the symptom of an over-dosage of creativity. They simply can’t stop!

6.

(O.S) A CNM student is actually a superman in disguise, he can perform the duties of a journalist or a public relations or advertising practitioner, yet comfortable with visual design and content production for digital media—e.g. online publications, blogs, podcasts virtual communities, interactive advertising, practically everything FUN.

7.

(O.S) Second Step: Where to find them?

8.

(O.S) You can’t.

9.

(O.S) A fully-evolved CNM graduate would have been snatched away the moment they step out of school. This is because , they are be able to work in a wide spectrum of private corporations, public agencies, non-profit organizations and media-related industries in policy formulation, public relations, corporate communication, media relations, media design, games design, journalism and research and information management positions, among others.

10.

(O.S) They are wanted EVERYWHERE.

So, you can’t simply grab them of the streets just like that!

11.

(O.S) Third Step: What to do to GET them?

12.

(O.S) There are a small group of pre-evolved CNM students carefully selected by our sharp and experienced lecturers. These students are usually found in a place called the National University of Singapore, and the CNM department keeps a record of the list of evolving students.

13.

(O.S) Want to search for them yourself?

14.

(O.S) Beware, you may find many students along your way, playing games on Facebook or even working on their smartphones. They are just the normal students pretending to be a CNM student.

15.

(O.S) Communications and New Media (CNM) at the National University of Singapore is the ONLY programme in Southeast Asia which offers media studies, interactive media design and communication management with a focus on new media.

16.

(O.S) Can you spot them yet?

Final: Chosen Ideas

Video 1: NUS MTV

Inspiration from:

Description of the project

We choose to promote NUS by a MTV. As we observed, many groups of previous semesters used documentary to promote NUS. Thus we strike to make a difference by using a song composed or remixed by us with a fast and happy rhythm.

The main idea of the  video is to answer the question “Why choose NUS?”. Because studying and living in NUS, you can meet different types of people from different cultures, who may later become your colleagues, competitors, neighbors or even your spouse. We tell a story of a boy and a girl and their journey around the Ken Ridge campus (can be understood as their whole journey in NUS during 4 years), in which they make friends with people from all faculties and schools and at their graduation day they meet their life partner.

The audience of this video is NUS current and potential students. Why choose NUS? Because in NUS, you can not only enhance your knowledge but also experience a piece of life, of making friends, keeping social contacts as well as finding the right person to rest your love on.

It is because different places in NUS have different lighting and to avoid the shaking of camera, we decide to use continuous shooting to show the characters running in stead of videotaping them. However the final scene at University Cultural Centre is videotaped, not taking pictures

Video 2: CNM COMMERCIAL

Inspiration from:

Description of the project

We choose to promote CNM by comedy-advertisement. Instead of using the normal way of market CNM promoting the job opportunities of CNM graduates, we decided to adapt the idea from Common Craft, where one makes a video using paper cut-outs. The main idea of the  video is to answer the question “What makes CNM students from other graduates?”

In this video, there will be two voices, conversing. The main voice is the person promoting the CNM students in an exaggerating way while the other person will be very skeptical.

The audience of this video is potential employers of the CNM students. The wide range of skills CNM equipped us with, from reporting, writing, photography to design skills using Photoshop, Illustrator etc. These skills will be beneficial for the students when they step into the working society.

The objective of the video is to let the audience know about the benefits of having CNM student in the company in a bold and direct way, as this will be a refreshing change from the subtle methods used in most advertisements.

As the NUS MTV idea was more or less fixed, we focused on solving the problem of filming the video under different lightings. In the end, I thought of the idea of using stop motion and photography so as that we do not have to worry about the shaking of the camera nor the lighting!

However, the idea for the second video is still unfix, we thought of many ideas but were afraid being too ambitious and not having enough time to complete it in time.

** Updated (26 Feb 2011)

I decided to use the idea of Common Craft to make a video parody for CNM. Topic: How to identify a CNM student.

This will solve our problem with the lack of time and the filming is not affected by the time of the day. Moreover, all we need is a good script, great voice (ahem) and also good drawing!

Final: Meeting 4 (Minutes)

We met up for a pilot filming on Friday, after our Assignment 1’s deadline, but sad to say, it was kinda failure. Daryl fell asleep and did not wake up (Must be the website!). We realised that he still did not managed to upload the files at 3pm! Ahhhh… Ok, I kinda screamed and quickly helped him with it~

In the end, when we did like half hour of filming, it drizzled. And we were still at pgp. zzz… We decided to split up the work and have each of us covering certain areas and meet up on Thursday (24th) with the videos and do the discussion.

Daryl shared with us the idea he had for the second video, and it was about merging animations with real videography. So it will be a story about a mouse mother and kid, walking along CNM room, hearing some weird loud noises and being very scared, in the end, when the camera zoom out, it’s actually people designing the whole mouse mother and kid walking thing… It’s kinda complicated, but we realised that this only covers the graphic/animation design part of CNM and not others. Also, there is A LOT of post-production work which we may not have the time!

But it was a nice idea all the same, so we told Daryl that he can actually use it for his Ken Burns, which will be much easier for him.

Sigh… this means we’re still one idea down.

But today, I thought of an idea, inspired by NUS’s own ads. Their slogan for 201o was XXX. Be the change. Thus, I thought we can have different people walking in front of a green screen, and based on their careers, they will be the one who change the backdrop.

Eg. Architect. – Create. Be the change. (The backdrop may be an old building, and when he gave it a wave, the backdrop is changed to a new building)
Educator. – Motivate. Be the change. ( A group of bored children, and when he gave the backdrop a tap, the bored children become alert and active.)
So this is somewhat like an ad for NUS.

Hmmm, wonder if it will be good.

Final: Meeting 3 (Minutes)

We met today to discuss the script, outline of the video and we realised that each of us actually have a different concept of what’s going to be in the video!

We came up with a common consensus for the Promote NUS (MTV) video and draft out what we need for the video.

As for the CNM video, after considering Julian’s advice, we decided to put the video on hold first and concentrate on our website, and work on it during the reccess week.

Check out the script by clicking on the link!

We will meet on Friday after our website deadline to do a pilot video, and also plan our 2nd video!
